Description : The Pied Avocet is a black-and-white shorebird with a very distinctive upturned bill (adult bird length approximately 46 cm, wing 23 cm, bill 8.7 cm, tarsus 8.7 cm, tail 9 cm). It is a predominantly white bird with black lines on its wings. It feeds on tiny molluscs, crustaceans, insects and occasionally plant matters. They engage in foraging behavior by searching for food in shallow brackish water or mud flats. They employ a distinctive feeding technique where they sway their bills from side to side, a behavior unique to avocets. Their diet primarily consists of crustaceans and insects.

During the breeding season, avocets select shallow lakes characterized by brackish water and exposed mud as their preferred habitat. They construct nests on open ground, often forming small groups and occasionally sharing space with other wading bird species. The female avocet lays three to five eggs in a lined scrape or on a mound of vegetation as their nesting strategy.
