Description : The Lesser Sand Plover is a sandy-brown bird that wears a broad rufous-orange breast-band at the breeding time (adult bird length approximately 19 cm, weight 45 g, wing 12.8 cm, bill 1.8 cm, tarsus 3.3 cm, tail 4.7 cm). In the non-breeding season, it looks grey-brown from above and white from below. It feeds on insects in the breeding season. It breeds in May-August. A study on Kentish plover breeding habitats revealed that they prefer low-elevation, low-vegetation, high-moisture areas away from human activity. Parents strategically move chicks to better food areas for increased growth and survival. Moving benefits include protection, more food, and avoiding competition, but there are costs like energy expenditure and increased predator risk. Larger females are more likely to move chicks to ensure their safety.
