Scientific Name : Charadrius alexandrinus
Family : Haematopodidae
Order : Charadriiformes
Class : Aves
Phylum : Chordata
Habitat : Coast

Description : Kentish Plover is a small bird with a white hind collar (adult bird length approximately 17 cm, weight 36 g, wing 11 cm, bill 1.5 cm, tarsus 2.7 cm, tail 4.5 cm). In the non-breeding season, it looks sandy-grey from above and white from below. Its broad white supercilium continues to the forehead. It feeds on beetles, flies, sand hoppers, crustaceans, molluscs and spiders. It breeds in March-August. A study on Kentish plover breeding habitats revealed that they prefer low-elevation, low-vegetation, high-moisture areas away from human activity. Parents strategically move chicks to better food areas for increased growth and survival. Moving benefits include protection, more food, and avoiding competition, but there are costs like energy expenditure and increased predator risk. Larger females are more likely to move chicks to ensure their safety.
