Description : The Black-backed Forktail is a small pied passerine with a long, forked tail (length 25 cm, weight 25 g, wing 9 cm, bill 2 cm, tail 12.5 cm approximately). The adult is black barred with white above and is white below except for a black throat. It has a white forehead extending above the eye, black crown and mantle, broad white band across its black wings, white tips to its secondaries and a white rump. The feathers of the long forked tail are graduated and lie over so the white tips of the shorter ones appear as a series of white spots or bands, with a white tip to the tail. It has brown eyes, black bill and fleshy-white legs and feet. It feeds mainly on aquatic insects and worms. It breeds in March-May.
