Description : The Red-throated Thrush is a grey passerine whose male is visibly different from the female (length 25 cm, weight 73 g, wing 13.5 cm, bill 2.2 cm, tarsus 3.5 cm, tail 10 cm. The male looks grey from above and whitish from below. It has black throat and breast. Its legs and feet are brownish-yellow. The female has black malar stripe, white throat, black or red spotted breast, grey flank and greyish-brown legs and feet. Both sexes have dark brown irises and a black bill with a yellow base of the lower mandible. Of the 2 known sub-species: T. r. ruficollis and T. r. atrogularis both occur in Bangladesh. T. r. ruficollis has red on tail. The male has red or chestnut throat and breast and the female has whitish throat with rusty tinge. T. r. atrogularis has whitish supercilium and grey streaking on breast and flank in first winter. The male has a black throat and the female has a whitish throat streaked with black in first winter. It feeds on invertebrates like insects, grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, white ants, earthworms, snails and occasionally berries and nectar. It prefers mixed and coniferous forests in Europe.
