Description : Large Niltava is a large flycatcher with strong sexual dimorphism (length 20 cm, weight 40 g, wing 10.5 cm, bill 2 cm, tarsus 2.5 cm, tail 9.3 cm). The male looks dark blue from above and purplish-blue from below. Its crown, forehead, sides of the neck, shoulder and rump are brilliant cobalt-blue. It has blackish face, black throat and breast, and purplish-blue belly. The female looks rufescent from above and fulvous-brown from below. It has pale-blue patches on the edges of neck, sides of the head and nape. Both sexes have dark brown irises, black bill, legs, feet and claws and grey sole. Their most noticeable features are black throat and breast of the male and pale-blue patches of the female. The juvenile looks rufous-brown with orange-buff scaling. It breeds in April-July. It feeds mainly on insects and berries.
