Description : The Taiga Flycatcher is a small pale-brown passerine (length 13 cm, weight 11g, wing 6.8 cm, bill 1.3 cm, tarsus 1.7 cm, tail 5 cm approximately). The male looks pale- brown from above and has blue-green hue on the crown. It also has blue-green ear-coverts and sides of the neck. Its chin, throat and upper breast are creamy-white, grey-white or pale-orange in the winter. Its throat turns red in the summer. Many males however, may not have red throat in the first three years. It has brown irises, brown bill which is paler at the base of the lower mandible and dark brown legs and feet. The female lacks the blue-green hue to the crown and face and the red throat. It breeds in May-June and nests in shallow depressions in stones and between stones. It feeds mainly on insects, especially mosquitoes and midges.
