Description : The Purple Sunbird is a small passerine with a cruved black bill (length 10 cm, weight 7.7 g, wing 5.5 cm, bill 2 cm, tarsus 1.4 cm, tail 3.3 cm approximately). The male looks different from the female. The breeding male has metallic blue-green and purple upperparts. It has a metallic purple throat and breast, dark blackish belly and vent, blackish wings and tail, and bright yellow pectoral tufts which are usually hidden. The non-breeding male is pale olive-brown above with a blue shoulder, blackish wings and tail. Its underparts are yellow with a broad blue-black line down the middle of the throat and breast. The female has olive-brown upperparts, dull yellow underparts and white tips to the outer tail feathers. It feeds chiefly on nectar and taking insects while feeding the chicks. It breeds throughout the year, mainly April-June.
