Description : The Purple-throated Sunbird is a small passerine with a short square tail and thin downcurved bill (length 10 cm, wing 4.7 cm, bill 1.6 cm, tarsus 1.2 cm, tail 2.8 cm). Its male is visibly different from the female. The male looks blackish from a distance but sunlight reveals a metallic blue back and rump, a metallic green crown, blackish sides to the head, nape, wings and tail, a shiny purple throat, a maroon breast and upper belly and sooty-brown lower belly. The female has olive-green upperparts and sheeks, dull yellowish underparts and white spots on the underside of the tail. It breeds in February-May. It feeds on berries, insects, spiders and nectar.
