Description : The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is a tiny shorebird with a spoon-shaped bill (adult bird length approximately 17 cm, wing 10 cm, bill 2.2 cm,spoon 1.1 cm, tarsus 2.1 cm, tail 3.8 cm). The non-breeding adult looks pale grey with a white supercilium, forehead and underparts. Its belly remains white. In breeding plumage its face, throat, neck and breast turn chestnut. It feeds invertebrates from the surface keeping its bill to the surface in a vibrating motion. It has a feeding style characterized by a side-to-side movement of its bill while walking forward with its head lowered. During the months of June and July, this species nests along coastal areas in the tundra, specifically selecting spots with grass near freshwater pools.
