Phylum : Chordata
Habitat : Haors

Description : Male Ruff bird is bigger than the female. (adult bird length approximately 26 cm, weight 125 g, wing 13 cm, bill 2 cm, tarsus 3.1 cm, tail 5.7 cm). It has a relatively long neck, small head and short slightly downcurved bill. It feeds on grass-seeds, worms, molluscs, insects, frogs and small fishes. The ruff breeds in lowland freshwater marshes and damp grasslands, avoiding tundra and severe weather areas. It prefers wetter regions for food and lekking sites in mounds and slopes. During migration, it forms large flocks, and in wintering grounds, huge dense groups are seen. Males display at leks, primarily targeting other males. The ruff exhibits inherited variations in plumage and mating behavior, with three male forms: territorial, satellite with a white neck ruff, and a rare variant with female-like plumage. Individual males maintain consistent behavior and appearance throughout their adult lives based on their genes.
