Description : The Red Knot is a small shorebird, grey in the winter and mostly reddish-chestnut in the summer (adult bird length approximately 25 cm, wing 17cm, bill 3.2 cm, tarsus 3 cm, tail 6 cm). In the winter, it looks ashy-grey from above and white from below with irregular grey markings on its flanks. Red knots have a varied diet including spiders, arthropods, larvae, bivalves, gastropods, and small crabs. They use tactile feeding techniques in mudflats and employ visual hunting during the breeding season. They are territorial and monogamous, nesting on the ground and sharing incubation duties. The chicks are precocial and begin foraging shortly after hatching. The female leaves before the young fledge, and the males stay with the chicks until they start their first migration.
