Description : The White-bellied Heron is a dull grey lanky waterbird having white on the belly. It has a dark grey upperpart with slaty-black crown, tail and flight feathers. It mainly feeds on fish, amphibians, reptiles or small mammals. It also takes crustaceans. It is more active at dawn and dusk. During the breeding season, the white-bellied heron vocalizes mostly in the early morning and late at night, rarely during the day. It roosts for long periods during the day, often on sandy patches, rocks, logs, or trees. At night, it sleeps with its head on its breast and one leg gripping the perch. Adults roost alone, while juveniles roost in pairs. The heron prefers to forage in shallow river sections, ponds, and island edges, feeding primarily on Schizothorax carps year-round. It also consumes brown trout in spring and Garra fish species in summer. Feeding bouts can range from 5 to 58 minutes.
