Description : The Eurasian Bittern is a large, chunky-brown heron (adult bird length approximately 75 cm, wing 33 cm, bill 6.7 cm, tarsus 9.5 cm, tail 11 cm). Its body colour is a combination of golden-brown, black and tawny-buff. Its irises are yellow, the lore and skin around the eyes are green, the stout legs and feet are pale green. It feeds on fish, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates. It occasionally takes small birds and rodents. It is more active at dawn and dusk. It is usually silent. It primarily consumes fish, small mammals, young birds, amphibians, crustaceans, and insects as its diet. The nest is typically constructed near the water's edge, often among reeds. The female bird incubates the eggs and provides nourishment to the young chicks. After approximately two weeks, the chicks venture out of the nest. The female bird continues to care for them until they are capable of flying, which occurs around six weeks later.
