White-tailed eagles typically build their nests in large trees, often favoring coniferous ones. The nest's location is influenced by the availability of food, with 75% of nests in Germany found within 3 km of a lake. However, some nests can be up to 11 km away from lakes but closer to the Baltic Sea. In Germany, 80% of nests were located in forests, particularly on wooded islands or promontories, near open spaces such as clearings, marshy areas, or agricultural land. Nests are typically large, made of sticks and branches, measuring around 1-2 m in width and depth, but can be even larger. They are lined with materials like moss, greenery, seaweed, or wool. The nest location provides easy access for the eagles, a clear view of the surroundings, protection from the elements, and defense against nest predators.
