Description : The Lesser Whitethroat is a small brownish-grey passerine with a white throat and dark ear-coverts (length 12 cm, wing 6 cm, bill 1.2 cm, tarsus 2.2 cm, tail 5.4 cm). The adult has plain brownish-grey upperparts, its dark brown tail is square ended and has white outer feathers. It has a slaty-grey crown and darker grey lores and ear-coverts. Its face looks horizontally divided between the dark mask and white lower-part down to the throat. It has pale grey flanks sometimes tinted pink, and a white breast, belly and vent. In fresh plumage, it may show a tiny pale supercilium, and pale buffish borders to the tertials and secondaries. Its bill is bluish-grey with black tip. It has brown to plumbeous-slate legs and feet. The male and the female look alike. The juvenile is buffy-brown with less grey. It breeds in Siberia in April-August. It feeds on insects.
