Description : The Purple Swamphen is a large swamp bird with attractive purple-blue plumage and red shield, bill and legs (adult bird length approximately 45 cm, weight 650 g, wing 26 cm, bill 4.5 cm, tarsus 9 cm, tail 10 cm). It looks purplish-blue all over. Both sexes have blood-red irises, a stout red bill. It feeds on seeds, grains, grassroots, small water plants, insects and mollusks. It breeds in April-September
