This species is naturally found in boreal forests, as well as subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests. In India, it is found in the Himalayan foothills up to an altitude of around 2500m and can also be found in bamboo jungles. The speckled piculet usually moves around in pairs on thin branches and sometimes hangs upside-down from the branch. Their behavior is similar to that of woodpeckers. The species mainly feeds on ants and termites.
