Scientific Name : Riparia riparia
Family : Hirundinidae
Order : Passeriformes
Class : Aves
Phylum : Chordata
Other Name : Sand Martin
Habitat : Sand or earth banks of large rivers, lakes and tanks.

Description : Sand Martin is a small bird with a forked tail. They have dark brown upperpart with grey ear-convert and white underpart. A brownish breast band is present. Wings are dark brown above and brown underside. They have black bill and short dark brown legs. Sand Martins do indeed prefer to live near larger bodies of water, as this provides them with a steady source of insects to feed on. Their diet mainly consists of small, aquatic insects, such as gnats and other flies, which they catch while in flight. These insects are often found near the water's surface, which is why Sand Martins are commonly found near rivers, lakes, and even the ocean. Sand Martins are highly sociable birds that nest in colonies of up to several hundred pairs. They excavate tunnels in sand or gravel, ranging from a few inches to several feet in length, and construct a chamber at the end of the burrow where they lay four or five white eggs in mid to late May. The nest is made up of straw and feathers and can quickly become infested with parasites. Second broods are common in all but the most northern breeding sites.
