Description : Barn swallow is a small bird with a bluish-black breast band. They have chestnut forehead, chin and throat with a glossy blue upperpart and pale cream to chestnut underpart.Their tail is forked and undertail has white spots. They have black bill and feet. The barn swallow prefers open country with low vegetation and nearby water, and avoids heavily wooded or built-up areas. It requires accessible open structures for nesting and exposed perching locations. Barn swallows are semi-colonial, settling in groups, and often return to the same breeding site. Old nests are highly prized as they take 2 weeks to build. During winter, the barn swallow can be found in a variety of habitats except for dense forests and deserts. It is commonly found in open areas with low vegetation, such as savannas and ranch lands. Males sing to defend small territories (when living in colonies, less so in solitary pairs) and to attract mates. Males sing throughout the breeding season, from late April into August in many parts of the range. Female songs are much shorter than male songs, and are only produced during the early part of the breeding season.
