Description : The Rufous Woodpecker is a dark brown bird with black-barred wings and tail. It has a short, black, slightly curved bill with a narrow nostril. Males have red-tipped feathers under the eyes, while females and juveniles lack them. They forage on ant nests and feed on insects, nectar, and sap. They have a distinct call and drumming note. They build their nests within acrobat ant nests, and both parents take part in the incubation and feeding of young. They are found in a wide range of habitats and have a breeding season from February to June. Their moult period occurs mainly from September to November.
