Description : This bird is a medium-sized woodpecker with a striking appearance. Its upperparts are black with prominent white bars, while the undertail is a vibrant shade of red. The breast and belly are buff-colored with faint barring on the flanks and slight streaking on the sides. The cheeks are whitish and partially bordered by a black line. In males, the crown is red with an orange forehead, while in females it is black.

This woodpecker can be found in natural habitats such as subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
