Description : The Red Avadavat is a little bird with a red bill and rump (length 10 cm, wing 4.8 cm, bill 1 cm, tarsus 1.2 cm, tail 3.7 cm approximately). The male looks different from the female. The breeding male looks entirely red with white dots all over the body, more on the breast and flanks, except for black lores, an olive-brown crown, nape and mantle, dark brown wings with white tips to the coverts and tertials, and a short blackish tail. It has a short triangular coral red bill, and pink legs and feet. The non-breeding male and female have dull brown upperparts with a red rump, a short dark eye stripe, white tips to the wing-coverts and tertials, and pale pinkish white underparts. It breeds in May-February, the peak period varying from place to place. It feeds mainly on grass seeds.
