Description : The Black Bittern is a very secretive, blackish waterbird with a long buff neck (adult bird length approximately 58 cm, wing 20.3 cm, bill 7.5 cm, tarsus 6.5 cm, tail 6.8 cm). Both sexes have golden-brown irises, yellowish-horn bill with a red tint and yellowish tip. Its facial skin is purple, and its legs and feet are dark brown. It feeds on fish, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates. It occasionally takes small birds and rodents. It is more active at dawn and dusk. It breeds in June-September.
