Description : Jerdon’s Leafbird is a species of lowland and foothill forests, particularly dry open wooded areas and forest edges. The male is green-bodied with a yellow-tinged head, black face and throat. It has a blue moustachial line. The female differs in that it has a greener head and blue throat, and young birds are like the female but without the blue throat patch. They have forked, brush-tipped tongues and fairly hefty, straight to lightly down-curved bills with stiff, hair-like feathers at the base that protect their eyes from the legs and wings of their insect prey. They feed on mostly insects, as well as taking fruits, berries and nectar. The oriental dollarbird shows a preference for open wooded areas that provide hollow-bearing trees suitable for nest construction. These birds are typically observed in solitary individuals, characterized by their unique upright silhouette. They can often be spotted perched high on a bare branch of a tree. From this elevated position, they engage in hawking behavior, swiftly swooping down to catch insects in mid-air. After capturing their prey, they frequently return to the same perch within a few seconds, maintaining a repetitive pattern of hunting and perching.
