It has a greyish-buff head with dark brown cap. Its fore-neck is greyish-buff and flight feathers are blackish. The bird is a nocturnal feeder, often seen in flocks around lakes and wet paddy fields during the day. It can perch on trees and occasionally builds nests in tree hollows. This duck has a long neck and is brown in color. Its broad wings are noticeable during flight, and it produces a loud two-note wheezy call. One way to distinguish it from the larger fulvous whistling duck is its chestnut rump, while the latter has a creamy white rump.
