Scientific Name : Sypheotides indicus
Family : Otididae
Order : Otidiformes
Class : Aves
Phylum : Chordata
Habitat : Grasslands

Description : The Lesser Florican is a long-legged terrestrial bird (adult bird length approximately 48.5 cm, weight 655 g, wing 21 cm, bill 3.7 cm, tarsus 9 cm, tail 9.8 cm). The head, neck and belly of the breeding male are entirely black. This contrasts with its white wing-coverts and a white collar. It feeds on insects, such as beetles, lizards and grasshoppers. It also takes drupes, berries, seeds and shoots of crop, grass and herb. The bustards are typically encountered either individually or in pairs within dense grasslands or occasionally in crop fields. During the breeding season, indigenous tribal hunters often targeted the males, as their courtship displays made them easy to spot. While the meat of these bustards was considered suitable for consumption, it was regarded as inferior.
