Description : Wet-season form: The butterfly's upperside is a very dark Vandyke brown color, with whitish brown cilia. On the underside of the wings, there is a distinct transverse white bar at the discal region, more pronounced on the forewing than on the hindwing. Following this bar, there are two or three dark pale-ringed ocelli on both wings, which do not have pupils. Additionally, there are pale slender lines present subterminally and terminally on the wings. The ground color on the underside is darker, and the discal white bar and terminal slender line remain as on the upperside. The forewing exhibits four white-centered, fulvous-ringed, black ocelli, while the hindwing has seven of these ocelli. Rows of ocelli on both wings are bordered by narrow crescentic pale purpurescent marks, forming somewhat irregular lines. A similar, lunular subterminal line is also present. The antennae, head, thorax, and abdomen are brown, with the antennae's club being ochraceous and marked with black on the inner side. This form corresponds to the male sex-mark in form 2.

Dry-season form: The butterfly's upperside is similar but paler in color. The ocelli, especially on the hindwing, may be obscure or absent. The transverse white discal band on the wings is narrow and very faint when viewed from the underside. On the underside, the basal areas of the wings up to the discal white band appear dark brown in males and ochraceous brown in females. The discal white band is very narrow and ochraceous white, and the terminal margins beyond it are purpurescent. The ocelli are minute, and both forewings and hindwings have short, transverse, brown striae
