Description : Barking deer are relatively small, with a height of about 50-70 cm (20-28 inches) at the shoulder and a weight of around 10-25 kg (22-55 lbs).

They have short, brownish-red fur that is darker on their back and lighter on their belly. They also have white spots on their throats and bellies. Males have short, unbranched antlers that grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) long, while females have bony knobs instead of antlers.

Barking deer are mainly solitary and are most active during the early morning and late afternoon. They are known for their distinctive "barking" call, which is used to communicate with other deer.

They are herbivores and feed on a variety of plants, including leaves, grasses, and fruits.

They are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, scrublands, and grasslands. They prefer areas with dense vegetation and are well adapted to living near human settlements.

Most species of barking deer are listed as "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), although some subspecies are threatened by habitat loss and hunting.
