Description : This butterfly has two forms: wet-season and dry-season. In the wet-season form, both male and female have dark to somewhat pale Vandyke-brown uppersides with distinctive ocelli and pale lines on the wings. The undersides have a purplish-white narrow discal band crossing the wings and bordered by sinuous purplish-white lines. The male has smaller ocelli on the upperside compared to the female.
In the dry-season form, the uppersides are similar but with smaller median ocelli. The undersides are brown, suffused with purple and darker transverse markings. Ocelli are often faint, and the male sex-mark is small and black on the underside of the forewing. Wingspan ranges from 42 to 54 mm.
