Description : The adult snakes can grow up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) in length, making them one of the longest snakes found in the Indian subcontinent.
They have a uniform dark brown or grayish-brown coloration on the dorsal side of their body, with some variations in color shades depending on the geographic location.
The oriental rat snake is found in a wide range of habitats, including forests, grasslands, farmlands, and urban areas.
It is a non-venomous and diurnal snake that is active during the day. They are fast-moving and agile climbers, and are known to be good swimmers.
They primarily feed on rodents, birds, and their eggs. They are also known to prey on other snakes and lizards.
Oriental rat snakes are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. The females lay a clutch of 10-15 eggs during the breeding season, which hatch after an incubation period of around 60 days.
The oriental rat snake is listed as a species of least concern on the IUCN Red List, as it is widely distributed and has a large population size. However, they are sometimes hunted for their skin and meat, and habitat destruction is a threat to their populations in some areas.
