Scientific Name : Calliophis melanurus
Family : Elapidae
Order : Squamata
Class : Reptilia
Phylum : Chordata
Habitat : Agricultural lands, gardens, both dense & open forests

Description : The slender coral snake has a distinct pattern of red, yellow, and black bands that encircle its body. However, this pattern is not always reliable for identification, as other nonvenomous species may have similar patterns. This species is relatively small, averaging between 20 to 30 inches in length. The venom of the slender coral snake is highly potent and can cause muscle paralysis and respiratory failure if not treated promptly. However, they are generally non-aggressive and will try to avoid confrontation with humans. This species can be found in a variety of habitats, including pine and oak forests, wetlands, and grasslands.
The slender coral snake primarily feeds on small reptiles, such as lizards and other snakes, as well as some small mammals and amphibians. The slender coral snake is a solitary and elusive species that spends most of its time hidden beneath leaf litter or burrowing in the soil. They are most active during the daytime in the spring and fall months. The slender coral snake is not currently listed as threatened or endangered, but habitat loss and fragmentation due to human development may pose a threat to its populations in some areas.
