Description : The adult River Terrapin turtle can grow up to 70 cm (27.5 inches) in length and weigh up to 35 kg (77 pounds).
The turtle has a brownish-black carapace (shell) with a slightly serrated edge. The plastron (underside of the shell) is pale yellow with black blotches. The skin is dark brown with yellow markings.
The species is primarily found in large rivers and estuaries with muddy or sandy bottoms.
The turtle is a diurnal species, meaning it is active during the day. It is also known to bask in the sun on logs or river banks.
The turtle is omnivorous, feeding on a variety of plant and animal matter, including fruits, insects, snails, and small fish.
Females lay 10-25 eggs in a clutch and bury them in sandy riverbanks. The eggs incubate for approximately 80-90 days before hatching.
The Batagur baska turtle is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, overexploitation for its meat and eggs, and collection for the pet trade. Conservation efforts include captive breeding programs and habitat protection.
