Common Pipistrelle Did you see this animal?

Scientific Name : Pipistrellus pipistrellus
Family : Vespertilionidae
Order : Chiroptera
Class : Mammalia
Phylum : Chordata
Habitat : Forest, Shrubland, Wetlands (inland), Caves and Subterranean Habitats (non-aquatic)

Description : Common pipistrelle has a wingspan of around 20-25 cm and a weight of only 3-8 grams.

The common pipistrelle has a distinctive appearance, with a reddish-brown fur on its back and a lighter underside. Its face is relatively flat with large, dark eyes and small, pointed ears. It has long, narrow wings that enable it to fly with incredible speed and agility, allowing it to catch small insects in mid-flight.

These bats are mostly active at dusk and dawn, spending their days roosting in trees, buildings, and other structures. They have a wide range of vocalizations, including echolocation calls that allow them to navigate and locate prey in the dark.

The common pipistrelle is an important part of many ecosystems, as it helps to control insect populations by consuming vast numbers of mosquitoes, midges, and other insects. In fact, it has been estimated that a single bat can eat up to 3,000 insects in a single night.

Despite their small size, common pipistrelles are remarkably long-lived for such small creatures, with some individuals living up to 14 years in the wild. However, these bats face a number of threats, including habitat loss, pesticide use, and the destruction of roosting sites. As a result, conservation efforts are underway to protect these important and fascinating creatures.
