Scientific Name : Hystrix indica
Family : Hystricidae
Order : Rodentis
Class : Mammalia
Phylum : Chordata
Other Name : Indian Porcupine
Habitat : Forest, Shrubland, Grassland

Description : Indian Crested Porcupines are large rodents, measuring about 60-90 cm (24-35 inches) in length and weighing around 11-18 kg (24-40 pounds).

They are covered with long quills that are black and white in color, with a prominent crest of longer quills on the head and shoulders. The quills are modified hairs that are used for defense.

These porcupines are herbivores, and their diet consists of leaves, bark, fruits, and roots.

They are found in a wide range of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and agricultural areas.

Indian Crested Porcupines are primarily nocturnal and solitary, and they are known for their defensive behavior when threatened. They will raise their quills and make a hissing sound to warn predators. If the predator persists, they will charge backward to stab the attacker with their quills.

These porcupines breed throughout the year, and females give birth to one or two offspring after a gestation period of about 100 days.

The Indian Crested Porcupine is listed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, they are hunted for their meat and quills, and their habitat is being destroyed by human activities such as deforestation and agriculture.
