They are commonly found in or near freshwater sources such as rivers, streams, swamps, and ponds. They are strong swimmers and are able to remain submerged for up to 30 minutes.
They are diurnal, which means they are active during the day. They are also semi-aquatic, spending time both on land and in the water. They are not aggressive, but will defend themselves if threatened.
They primarily eat fish and amphibians, but will also consume other small animals such as crustaceans, insects, and small mammals.
Common Smooth Water Snakes breed in the spring, with females laying eggs in the summer. Clutches can contain up to 40 eggs.
The Common Smooth Water Snake is not listed as endangered or threatened, but habitat destruction and human persecution are threats to their populations in some areas.
