Scientific Name : Lepidochelys olivacea
Family : Cheloniidae
Order : Testudines
Class : Reptilia
Phylum : Chordata
Other Name : Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle
Habitat : Coastal water, deep sea.
Description : Olive Ridley turtles are relatively small, with a carapace length of around 2-2.5 feet (60-75 cm) and a weight of around 75-100 pounds (34-45 kg).
The carapace of Olive Ridley turtles is usually olive-green in color, hence their name. They have five pairs of costal scutes (scales) with a V-shaped pattern on the top.
Olive Ridley turtles are found in warm waters of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. They are known to form large nesting aggregations, known as arribadas, on certain beaches in the Americas, such as in Costa Rica and Mexico.
The turtles feed mainly on a variety of crustaceans, such as crabs and shrimp, but also eat jellyfish, tunicates, and fish.
Females usually lay their eggs on sandy beaches between June and December. Olive Ridley turtles exhibit mass nesting behavior, with thousands of females coming ashore to nest at the same time.
The Olive Ridley turtle is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with the main threats to their survival being habitat loss, egg collection, accidental capture in fishing gear, and pollution. Conservation efforts include protection of nesting beaches, reduction of bycatch, and regulation of the trade in turtle products.
