Scientific Name : Pangio oblonga
Family : Cobitidae
Order : Cypriniformes
Class : Actinopterygii
Phylum : Chordata
Other Name : Black Kuhli Loach
Habitat : Streams

Description : Java loach is recognized for its elongated and slender body, which can reach lengths of 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5 centimeters). Its body is covered in numerous dark, vertically elongated bands that alternate with lighter, pale yellow to reddish-brown stripes. This pattern resembles the attire of a traditional Javanese coolie, which is the origin of its common name. The dorsal fin of this loach is relatively small and positioned towards its posterior end.

One of the notable features of this fish is its ability to breathe atmospheric air. These fish possess a modified intestine that allows them to gulp air at the water's surface, which is particularly useful in oxygen-deprived environments like muddy puddles and slow-moving streams, which are typical habitats for them in the wild. They are typically appreciated for their peaceful temperament and intriguing behavior. They are primarily bottom-dwellers and spend much of their time sifting through the substrate, searching for food and hiding in crevices or plant roots. Due to their social nature, they are often kept in small groups.

Caring for this fish in an aquarium involves providing them with suitable conditions. This includes a soft substrate, like sand or fine gravel, plenty of hiding places, and a well-maintained tank with stable water parameters. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a temperature range of 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 28 degrees Celsius). It is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. They enjoy small live or frozen invertebrates, sinking pellets, and even vegetable matter.
