Water monitors are semi-aquatic, spending much of their time in or near bodies of water such as rivers, swamps, and lakes. They are also found in forests and other types of vegetation.
Water monitors are carnivorous and opportunistic, feeding on a variety of prey including fish, crustaceans, small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They are known for their powerful jaws and sharp teeth, which allow them to capture and consume their prey.
Water monitors are solitary animals and are generally active during the day. They are also excellent swimmers and climbers, and are able to move quickly both on land and in water.
Water monitors are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, although they are threatened by habitat loss, hunting for their meat and skin, and capture for the pet trade.
