Description : Starry Puffer Fish is a sizable pufferfish, can reach lengths of up to 120 cm (47 in). Its body is oval-shaped, spherical, and somewhat elongated, covered in prickly skin devoid of scales. Lacking pelvic fins and a lateral line, it features small, symmetric dorsal and anal fins situated at the rear end of the body. With a large head, it boasts a short snout hosting two pairs of nostrils, and its terminal mouth houses four robust teeth.

The coloration of this fish ranges from white to grey, adorned with black spots that dot the body harmoniously, with the ventral area typically clearer. The size of these spots inversely correlates with the fish's size; juveniles exhibit larger spots, while adults of maximal size display smaller spots. Juveniles display a yellowish body with dark stripes, transitioning into spots as they mature. Found in tropical and subtropical waters, this species prefers habitats near external reef slopes and sheltered lagoons with clear water, particularly close to sandy areas, at depths ranging from the surface down to about 58 m (190 ft). Its diet includes benthic invertebrates, sponges, algae, coral polyps like Acropora, crustaceans, and mollusks.
